VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps were a minute away from winning the Voyageurs Cup for a second year in a row, when Toronto FC midfielder Will Johnson snatched it away, scoring in the dying seconds to give Toronto the Amway Canadian Championship.
Vancouver lost game one in Toronto by a score of 1-0 putting them in a hole coming home for leg two.
After a scoreless first half that saw few scoring chances, the Whitecaps came out blazing after the break. Substitute forward Nicolas Mezquida gave Vancouver the 1-0 lead in the 47th minute, heading in a beautiful cross from Jordan Harvey.
The Whitecaps then added a second in the 68th minute when defender Tim Parker snuck behind the TFC backline and scored, giving Vancouver a 2-0 lead in the game, and putting them up 2-1 on aggregate.
Then in the last minute of stoppage time, Whitecaps keeper David Ousted came out to catch an innocent looking ball, but defender Kendall Watson made contact with Ousted, causing him to drop the ball. TFC midfielder Will Johnson pounced and finished the chance, giving TFC the all important away goal and clinching the Voyageurs Cup for the visitors.
Vancouver wins the game 2-1 but misses out on their second consecutive Amway Canadian Championship by virtue of the aggregate away goal rule.
The Whitecaps will resume their MLS schedule on Monday when they visit the Los Angeles Galaxy.
