VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Leg two of the Amway Canadian Championship final is this evening at BC Place. The Whitecaps are trying to repeat as Voyageurs Cup champions. They enter the game down one goal on aggregate after Toronto FC won the opener last week 1-0 in Ontario.

Caps Assistant Coach Gordon Forrest says his team knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game and to come away with that result it wasn’t as bad as we thought. We come home to BC Place to win, which we did in the semi-final against Ottawa. We want to win this competition again and the boys have been preparing to come away with that end result.”

Even though the Caps trail by goal entering the final leg, midfielder Andrew Jacobson says it’s crucial Vancouver doesn’t panic in the early going against their Canadian rivals.

“They probably have a bit more quality to punish us if we make mistakes. It doesn’t have to be something where we go and score in the first ten minutes or try like crazy, because if they start hitting us on the counter and scoring goals, we will be in trouble.”

Midfielder Russell Teibert is the Caps franchise leader for the most Canadian Championship games played and as a Canadian he says he takes great pride in playing in the tournament.

“I take pride in being Canadian and I wear the Canadian flag with honour. I remember hoisting the trophy last year and all the feelings that come with it. It’s amazing when you can be the Canadian champion with the club you’ve been with for a number of years.”

This will be the 21st all-time meeting between the two clubs.

Toronto is seeking its fifth Canadian Championship, while Vancouver is aiming for its second after winning last year.

Kick off is at 7 p.m.
