MONTREAL, QUE (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps are headed east to face Montreal Impact this afternoon at Stade Saputo.

The ‘Caps have three losses on the road this season. One common theme from those matches, aside from the results, was that Vancouver did not sit back. It played to win. And that’s exactly the game plan for today according to defender Jordan Harvey. “I think if we continue that, we’ll pick up more points than if you have the mentality of sitting back and being more defensive. We’re a team that’s better on the front foot and that’s how we’ll approach games.”

Vancouver striker Fredy Montero is expected to lead the charge as he is one of the hottest players in Major League Soccer. He’s scored four goals and one assist in his last four matches.

The future of Canadian soccer may be on display throughout this battle.

The Whitecaps have 16-year-old Alphonso Davies, the youngest active player in the league, while Montreal has Ballou Tabla, who turned 18 on March 31.

The two African-born, Canadian-raised players have been teammates on national youth squads in recent years and know each other well.

“I’m his friend,” says Tabla. “But it’s my team against his team. We will try to get the three points. He’s a good young player like me. I’m happy for him. We played with the national team and he was my roommate. We had time to talk a lot.”

Today’s match will be the first of three meetings between Vancouver and Montreal over the next month.

Kick-off is at noon.
