SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A Surrey women’s soccer team is raising money for one of its players who was brutally assaulted earlier this month.

The club has raised $11,000 since setting up a GoFundMe page.

Mariah Saraje 21, is recovering in hospital after an attack that left her with multiple stab wounds, including a slit throat.

Her teammate Simrit Parmar set up the GoFundMe page to help with her recovery, as Saraje is a refugee from the African country, Gambia and doesn’t have any family here.

“Right now we’re talking about perhaps putting it into a trust fund and maybe helping her pay for school or any of the medical bills that aren’t covered,” Parmar says.

“[Mariah is] honestly one of the strongest people that I’ve ever met, any of us have ever met. She’s so happy, very outgoing, incredibly athletic,” she adds.

Saraje was attacked earlier this month inside the home of a man she knew, and only escaped when neighbours heard her screaming.
